Harris Tweed is the only fabric in the world with a designation of origin governed by the British Parliament. This law is applied under the supervision of Harris Tweed Authority®, a body which holds the exclusive authority to identify a cloth as authentic Harris Tweed® and ensure it was made from pure virgin wool dyed, spun and handwoven by the islanders in the Outer Hebrides at their homes. At Ondarreta, we collaborated with Harris Tweed Authority® to develop our new collection Harris, which has been applied to our Aia and Lana families.

Harris Tweed®is the only handwoven cloth sold around the globe. The cloth is woven from rustic local wool, spun by hand and dyed with natural pigments, mainly from lichens (Parmelia saxatilis, P.sulcata, and Parmelia omphalodes). The wool is washed in soft peaty water before being dyed using dyestuffs from these plants and lichens, which also give Harris Tweed® its distinctive smell. Dyeing the wool before spinning it makes for a unique color palette, which reflects faithfully the landscape in which its weavers are born and raised.
